Tchaikovsky - Marche Slave (Final Fantasy VI Soundfont)
As requested by Squall Rowlandson, here's a rendition of Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave with the Final Fantasy VI soundfont.
The Marche Slave, also known in English-speaking countries as the "Slavonic March", is similar to the famous 1812 Overture in many ways. It is another orchestral depiction of a battle in programmatic terms by Tchaikovsky (albeit without live cannon fire this time), in this case being a Russia's intervention in the Serbian-Turkish Wars, as they offered help to the Serbian side.
The main music featured in this piece depicts the plight of the oppressed Serbs, and is imbued with a Serbian quality, mostly due to using tunes from actual Serbian folk songs, these being "Sunce jarko, ne sijaš jednako" and "Rado ide Srbin u vojnike".
There's a remarkably more jolly contrasting section later (3:35), as the Russians prepare to go to the Serbs' aid. Tchaikovsky even finds room for a brief quote of what was then Russia's national anthem, "God Save the Star" (5:06), right before the main conflict is resumed (5:21) and we return to the Serbs' cries for help, which are now more desperate than ever (6:12).
In the end, however, the cavalry finally arrives as the Russians enter the scene with an unmistakably proud swagger (7:35), and thus the music ends triumphantly.
