Explaining a bit about signal to noise ratio. It is exactly as it sounds its the ratio of signal (what you want to hear or record) to noise (everything else).

This gets into the reason why having a item like the ModMic is such a good idea because it allows you to increase your S/N ratio as compared to products like desktop mics or the Zalman clip on mic.

Mic quality will never trump S/N ratio quality. As a good mic will still pick up the noise just as much as the signal given its in the recording pattern.
