A playthrough of Ultra's 1989 license-based action game for the NES, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I loved this game as a kid, dedicating a ridiculous number of hours to learning it inside and out when I was around nine or so. As so many that cut their gaming teeth in the late 80s can tell you, even by NES standards, TMNT's difficulty level is through the roof. The notoriety it has gained over the years is well deserved.

But regardless of how many tears of frustration it has drawn from unsuspecting kids, it's a quality game. Despite the awkward glitchiness that shows through a bit too often, the graphics are sharp and do a nice job of capturing the gritty style of the comic, and though it doesn't use any of music from the TV show, the soundtrack is one of Konami's greats on the NES.

Once you get a handle on the jump physics, the controls are solid, and being able to choose which turtle to use lets you decide how you want to tackle each area. This allows for some fun experimentation as long as you keep two important things in mind: Raphael and Michaelangelo are always the expendable ones (perfect for the underwater stage!), and Donatello should be kept alive at all costs.

If you're really determined to see it through to the end, the biggest tip I can offer is to use the buildings in stage three to stock up on supplies. If you take a few minutes to collect scrolls and pizzas for everyone, the rest of the game becomes *way* more manageable.

I rerecorded many of the TMNT games around the time that I started updating my videos to 4K60, and with Konami's announcement of the upcoming TMNT Cowabunga Collection, I don't think I could've asked for a better opportunity to put them up. They are brand new playthroughs that I'll be posting over the next few weeks, so stay tuned! There's plenty of more to come.
