How To Play Terraforming Mars
It is 2315AD, Earth has become overpopulated and the resources required to sustain life on Earth is starting to dwindle. The World Government believes that for humanity to survive, we need to colonise planets such as Mars. To make it habitable, a united effort is required.
Terraforming Mars is a card management, tableau building, engine building board game where players take control of various corporations as they compete projects to terraform Mars to raise their corporation’s terraform rating and thus win the game.
There are aspects of Terraforming Mars that make it an immensely fun game.
3 Global Parameter Tracks – O2, Temperature, Ocean
The aim of the game is for players to essentially complete projects or converting resources that will contribute to the improvement of 3 global parameters on Mars, O2 levels, temperature and development of Oceans. Once the maximum level of each of these tracks is reached, the end of the game is triggered.
Terraform Rating + Victory Points System
Your Terraform Rating are essentially your Victory Points in the game which serves as a real time record of how well you have contributed project wise to the terraforming process on Mars.
Player Boards – Resource Production Tracker
Your player boards track how much of each resource you have and how much is produced at the end of each generation. You feel like your operating a machine ensuring each part is functional.
Tile Placement – Map of Mars
The game board is a depiction of the Tharsis region of Mars with the hexagonal spaces representing the different regions players can build greenery, ocean tiles and mine for resources.
Corporation Cards
The corporation cards provides players with different starting resources and rule altering effects. These cards often govern a player’s starting strategy and focus in the game.
Project Cards – Types
Some projects have a specific environmental condition that is required before being able to be played so timing the use of project cards is crucial. The cost and card requirements are located in the top left corner.
