Found out after I did this that Deerclops doesn’t have any defense. Now I look like an idiot for using Shark Tooth Necklace. I don’t even know what else to put there. Anklet of the Wind for more base movement speed would probably help the most but if you don’t want to dig around the jungle for another one of those you can always just do Shackle or whatever gives the most defense.

Deerclops has a huge health pool and damage output for something that can be the first boss you encounter. Most of it’s drops are very solid for early game, but actually killing it so early on can be tricky. The earliest I think it’s reasonable to kill it is after Eye of Cthulhu, because dash helps a lot here. You unfortunately can’t use it to dash under him, you’ll bonk, but that’s what Magluminesence is for, an item I think is tailor made for this fight and is another reason I chose post EoC (even though it’s technically available before it). Being able to quickly reach top speed without dashing is extremely valuable to keep your damage consistent. Once you get the hang of holding back your dash, you can run under him pretty easily to dodge slam attacks. It’s better to stay close to him to prevent him from using his projectile, so this also helps there. Warmth Potion also helps, I just didn’t think of it.

Lately I’ve been doing Expert Hardcore attempts, so this was a test to see how difficult it would be to get away with an early kill. I had pretty optimistic gear, but it’s more than doable. I’ll definitely start going for this in more runs, the potential reward is very solid.

This strategy probably works on Master Mode too, just do everything here better.
