Test Bench: Dolphin Emulator (Part 1) - 2015-01-25
Update: I'm trying out build 5323 of the emulator and it actually made it past the lock-up point on Super Mario Galaxy! It dinged like there was an error at that exact point, and even popped out of full screen, but the game continued going in the background and I switched back into it and made it to the first save point. This... this may actually be happening :) I'll record a part 2 with the new emulator build, and also do a back-to-back emulated vs. Wii U's virtual Wii mode, just for the visual comparison.
You can get the Dolphin emulator here: http://dolphin-emu.org/

I've been thinking about some Let's Play ideas, and some of them involve Wii games. Now, I could simply just play them on the Wii U and record through the Elgato like I've been doing for Hyrule Warriors, but I'm disappointed that Nintendo didn't take the opportunity to have the Wii U not just upscale the 480p Wii games, but rather natively render them at 1080p.
So I wanted to see what the state of Wii emulation is like. Honestly? I'm damned impressed. There are glitches, and crashes, but man... when everything comes together, it's a beautiful sight to behold.
However, I currently am thinking for any LPs that I'll likely be playing them on the Wii U just to ensure I don't have to worry about random crashing. There are two possibilities that might change my mind, however. One is if a more recent nightly/experimental build of Dolphin is further along in emulation stability than the currently offered "stable" build (which is from 2013, btw), and two, if I can figure out a way to automate the process of save states, maybe every 1-5 minutes. That way a random crash means I only have to re-do a few seconds/minutes, not everything from the last checkpoint, save point, or whenever I randomly thought to save the game manually. Might be able to make that work with an AutoHotKey script, actually, just have it "hit" shift+f1 every 30-60 seconds...
All my Wii games, including the ones featured here, were ripped from their original retail discs with a softmodded Wii.
