Tetris 2, known in Japan as Tetris Flash, is an updated and expanded version of the 1993 NES game of the same name (https://youtu.be/3paQ-BjBpcM).

Like I said in my review of the 8-bit version, Tetris 2 isn't a true sequel to the original game as much as it is an unrelated block-dropping puzzle game with a misleading name slapped on it to boost sales.

The primary difference between the two lies in how you go about clearing blocks from the playfield. In Tetris 2, individual blocks are cleared by lining up three of the same color vertically or horizontally (Dr. Mario, is that you?), and by clearing a flashing block, you'll knock out all the pieces of the same color at once. The ultimate goal of each stage is to clear the three flash blocks, and the fewer moves you can accomplish this in, the better the bonuses will be to carry into the next stage.

The normal and versus modes are the same as you'll find in the NES game, but the puzzle mode is new to this version. In puzzle mode, each stage has a predetermined layout that must be cleared in as few moves as possible. These can be pretty tough, but I liked that they required some real thought and experimentation to figure out. (Please note that I had the solutions figured out before I recorded this. There's no way I would've been able to clear them all on the first attempt otherwise).

As much as I liked the puzzles, my favorite part of the SNES version was the upgraded presentation. The backgrounds are so much nicer to look at than the garish yellow backdrops were in the NES game, and the cutscenes that you're rewarded with every five stages are funny and do a nice job of keeping things from becoming too monotonous. Each game mode has its own unique cutscenes and ending, which was something I thoroughly appreciated.

If you're looking specifically for an SNES Tetris game, you'd be better served by the excellent Tetris & Dr. Mario (https://youtu.be/2nuTufbYeNg), but if you're in the mood for something a bit different, Tetris 2 can be pretty entertaining, and there's a lot of content here to keep you occupied if you get into it.
