A playthrough of Philips' 1992 puzzle game for the Philips CD-i, Tetris.

Tetris needs no introduction at this point. From game systems to Java-based phones, refrigerator screens to calculators, if you've owned anything that puts an image on a screen over the past thirty years, you've had a way to experience this classic.

The CD-i, a multimedia set-top box that had dreams of competing with the major game consoles, was no exception.

From a gameplay perspective, the CD-i version isn't anything to write home about. You can only turn your pieces in one direction, there's no way to speed up the fall of a piece unless you want to do a hard drop, and the controls are terrible. The gameplay was clearly designed around the limitations of the CD-i's remote control, and it works, but it's far from ideal. There's a nasty bit of lag in the controls, and the game is prone to dropping inputs at the worst possible times.

In other words, it feels like a typical CD-i game, but this version of Tetris isn't one that you'd pop in for the gameplay.

This is a game you play for its aesthetic. Every level has its own unique FMV backdrop of a nature scene backed by a relaxing new age music track, and the vibes are incredible. People often refer to it as a prime example of the genre we now know as vaporwave, and I can't argue there. Jim Andron's superstar soundtrack nails it.

Imagine how cool this would've been to have had at home back in 1992!

In case you're wondering why the video looks so soft, this wasn't emulated. Emulators glitch out and mess up the video and audio loops, so this was recorded directly from a DVS-branded CD-i deck over a composite connection.

Someone asked me to do a video of this game quite some time ago. I don't remember who it was, but if that was you, here you go. Sorry it took so long to get around to putting it up!
