The event was hosted by Steve Martin and it was a big night for Harvey Weinstein and Miramax who had 3 films in the running for best picture including Chicago which ended up winning the main prize and came away with 5 other Oscars including best supporting actress for Catherin Zeta Jones.
It also saw Roman Polansky, who pled guilty to the statutory rape of 13 year old girl in 1977, receive a near minute long standing ovation from the audience and a controversial anti-war speech from Michael Moore who took home the oscar for best Documentary for Bowling for Columbine
Oh and hey there’s a 23 year old Diego Luna!
And that’s Andy Sirkis making a statement about the war in Iraq that started just a few days before the awards ceremony
