Kia shared pictures of its upcoming 2021 Sedona minivan late June, showcasing new, burly looks more befitting of a truck than a minivan.
To clarify, these images show the Korean-market Sedona, where it’s known as the “Carnival,” and where Kia decided to add a new phrase to the auto industry lexicon to better describe the thing: “Grand Utility Vehicle,” or GUV.
We get it, at first sight, it looks like a three-row SUV, not the minivan we’re used to, but the sliding doors and low ride height are a dead giveaway this is a classic people-mover.
The design is decidedly square, too, but that’s a good thing. LED daytime running lights surround Kia’s “Tiger Nose” grille, which has been heavily styled. Inside the grille is a chrome diamond pattern, plus high-beam headlights.
The side profile has been made arrow straight, and now features a diamond-patterned C-pillar with chrome that surrounds the rear window.
Around the back is the sort of full-width rear taillight manufacturers seem crazy about these days, with a Kia badge smack-dab in the centre.
The only teasers were these images, so we’re not sure what powertrain could be hiding under that square hood. It’s possible the ’21 Sedona will continue to use the current 276-hp 3.3-litre V6; or it could see an upgrade to the Telluride’s 3.8-litre V6, which produces 291 horsepower.
The Carnival goes on sale in South Korea at the end of the third quarter of 2020; it will be unveiled in North America as the Sedona shortly after, when we’ll know more about pricing and powertrain options.
