The 7th Guest - Virgin Interactive, 1993 - IBM/PC (4K)
A playthrough of Trilobyte's The 7th Guest, released by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in the spring of 1993.
The 7th Guest was one of the first computer games to be released only on CD-ROM, utilizing the format's vast amount of space to accommodate its live-action video clips and pre-rendered 3D graphics in 24-bit Super VGA resolution, all of which helped the title receive a great amount of press attention early on. When released in April of 1993 it was received with critical acclaim, won numerous awards, and in its first year sold 450.000 copies, earning more than $15 million. Alongside Brøderbund's Myst, The 7th Guest became the multimedia game to have and spearheaded the sales of CD-ROM drives.
The following year sales reached 500,000 copies and exceeded one million by 1995. By the end of 1997, the game had sold in excess of 2.3 million copies worldwide.
The majority of the puzzles Trilobyte initially intended to use throughout the game were under copyright, so the developers used puzzle books from the 19th century.
