The A500Mini Direct Video Capture - Running Additional Software On A USB Drive (Amiga)(Mini)
#A500mini #amiga #retrogames
The A500 Mini is a compact, modern recreation of the legendary Amiga 500 home computer, developed by Retro Games Ltd. and released in 2022. It emulates classic Amiga systems (A500, A600, and A1200), delivering plug-and-play retro computing with a very detailed miniaturized shell and modern HDMI output.
Design: Half-size replica of the original Amiga 500, complete with non-functional keyboard and original-style vents
Controller: Bundled with a classic-style two-button USB mouse and a modern 8-button USB gamepad
Games: Comes preloaded with 25 licensed Amiga classics, including Worms: The Director’s Cut, Speedball 2, Simon the Sorcerer, Zool, Alien Breed 3D, The Chaos Engine, and Cadaver
Modern Enhancements: Save states, quick-load, scaling options, CRT scanlines, and a virtual keyboard.
Software & Compatibility:
Supports WHDLoad-based USB game loading, allowing users to add their own Amiga games (.lha format) by putting these on a FAT32 formatted USB drive with the games in a specific format in a specific folder.
It emulates A500, A600, and enhanced A1200 chipset games via UAE emulation. I even managed to get CD32 games working. Although I had to supply additional CD32 bios files.
USB keyboard support for text-based games and Amiga workbench emulation
Custom configuration options via text-based config files for advanced users (uae configuration files).
Pros: amazing looking mini replica of the Amiga 500, additional USB game loading with WHDLoad support. Can be tweaked to expand compatibility through UAE Config files. Lovely selection of default games.
Cons: non functional keyboard although the on screen one works well enough for the odd key press in a menu, some games will only work when the UAE config is tweaked, the cd32 style gamepad isn’t ideal and doesn’t easily do diagonals. The speed doesn’t seem to be 100% correct, it can be a little fast even.
Target audience: Ideal for Amiga fans, 80s/90s retro gamers, and collectors who want a fuss-free way to revisit the golden age of home computing. Also great for newcomers curious about the Amiga legacy. For the more seasoned Amiga users this setup is limited and a little cumbersome.
