90s Video Games, Episode 155

In today’s episode, I am going to go through three home ports of the Mortal Kombat 2, released on the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and Sega 32x. I am going to compare them with each other and give you the truth, which one of them is truly the best and why.

I am also going to reveal you the secrets and cheats in Mortal Kombat 2, on these mentioned three consoles. Did you know that there is a special fatality, that is only available on Sega Genesis?

Also there is a trick to destroy the Acclaim logo in the Super Nintendo version. SNES version also includes a hidden Endurance Mode, absent in other versions.

Of course, we need to talk about some weird glitches, if talking about Mortal Kombat 2.

In the end of this video I am going to show you all three gameplays, side by side.

So stay tuned and enjoy the video.

I know SNES version has received a lot of praise over the years because of it's appearance. But here is the truth! SNES version might have a little more detailed graphics, more sound effects but it controls like shit! It's unresponsive and sluggish controls make it nearly unplayable.

Not everything looks better on the SNES. Just take a look at the Johnny Cage shadow moves, what is happening with the shadow? Or take a look at Baraka performing his shredder move, does it have to be so clunky? What his happening with Mileena’s upper body?

The SNES version has a hidden opening sequence where Shao Kahn mocks the Acclaim logo and then Kintaro destroys it.

SNES version also includes a hidden Endurance Mode where both players could select four characters to fight for a single match. At the Game Start screen, hold L + R and press Start. A 4X4 match should begin. Note that this is for two players only, and the computer will not participate.

Unlike any other port, SNES version has Select screen Kodes.

There was one Fatality glitch on the SNES version, you did a Babality, then pressed a combination of buttons, your opponent would turn back to their original version then explode.

If someone knows how to do it, please let me know in the comments!

Genesis version has less sound effects, but much better soundtracks. Graphics have less details and some stages look worse than on the SNES, some are more less the same, but some stages I actually like even more. There is more sharpness and contrast in Genesis version, and somewhat darker look compared to SNES goofy look. Also, character sprites and faces look better on Genesis in my opinion.

And if you think about Genesis and SNES controllers, then Genesis controller feels like it was designed to play Mortal Kombat.

Genesis also has some exclusive content in it. And I am going to explain, what needs to be done.

Fergality is a special fatality, that is only available on Sega Genesis, and could only be performed on the Armory stage, only by Raiden.

Enter the options menu and highlight Done. Then press left, down, left, right, down, right, left, left, right, right. After entering the cheat code, a secret Test Modes menu will appear. Enter it and go to the third page of the menu and turn the Oh Nasty option on.

Now select Raiden and make your way to the Armory stage. After defeating your opponent, when the Finish him prompt appears, from any distance, enter the input and the Fergality will be performed.

The defeated player's character turns into Fergus McGovern, a guy who worked on the Genesis port.

Also. By unlocking the secret cheat menu, another exclusive content will be enabled. Dan Forden’s Toasty is replaced by a crudely drawn Sprite inserted by one of Probe Entertainment's programmers.

In the Sega Genesis version, there is also a rare glitch involving Kung Lao whose Hat Throw attack may accidentally chop off the opponent's head during the round, automatically counting as a Fatality.

If playing Genesis version and SNES versions side by side, it's a clear victory for the Genesis. The difference comes especially clear if you first play Genesis version and then immediately try to play SNES version, it’s clunky and glitchy. After playing for a while, you eventually will get used to it. But as soon as you return to Genesis version, it’s a wow effect.

Talking about glitches. SNES version has this weird glitch, when you play with Baraka and start shooting from the distance, you opponent starts jumping back and land exactly on the projectiles.

32x version fixed what Genesis version was missing – it added more details to the graphics, added missing sound effects while retaining amazing soundtracks of the Genesis and sharp accurate controls.

If comparing all three, here is my order: 32x is better than Genesis, and Genesis is better than SNES.

And now I will show you all three gameplays, side by side. Enjoy!
