He-Man was a major influence on me growing up.
The melding of fantasy and scifi tropes was something that really resonated with me even at an early age.
This book is a treasure trove of background material for a He-Man fan. It actually reminds me of the Super Sentai design works books my son has.
Early proof of concept artwork, movie preproduction sketches, a whole section devoted to the Filmation cartoon, posters and packaging art, it's all here. There isn't really a rundown on characters or anything along those lines, with the expectation that if you're flipping through this book you probably already have a passing interest in the material.
The section on the early Millennium relaunch is interesting, as I don't ever recall seeing the overwhelming bulk of the figures shown. Granted, I wasn't big on the toy collector scene, but there seem to be almost as many released nowadays compared to the original launch. Maybe it's just me?
I think if you grew up with the Masters of the Universe, this is a cool book to check out.
What I didn't realize is this was the first in a whole series of massive books that Dark Horse is putting out- turns out the biggest one yet is a 700+ page book chronicling the entire toy line, and it's due out this month! Awesome!
