First I go over his loadout. You want to bring the shotgun and SMG11. The only reason you'd use his FMG is is you can't control the SMG11, but trust me its worth the practice. You use his shotgun to open holes for you and your team to use. This varies from rotates, to head-holes, to smoke lineups with his shotgun also being a good choice for close range gunfights.
In the game of Rainbow 6 Siege one of the most important aspects of defense is map control. Smoke is by far the best when it comes to this when it comes to his smoke canisters. These smoke canisters last 10 seconds and you have 3 of them. This being said, one of the best strategies to use as him is to wait for the last 30 seconds, and use all of his smoke canisters where they're pushing. (1 canister every 10 seconds)
Smoke is also a really good defending operator in Rainbow Six Siege because you can use his smokes to not only damage people but also to block lines of sight. Because well...they're smokes. This allows you to focus on one push at a time while you smoke off someone else that could be shooting you.
Overall, Smoke is a very flexible and powerful defending operator for the support role in r6s. He brings a lot of versatility and power to the team with his entry denial, deployable shield, his shotgun, and can make anchoring very fun.
