Previous editions of dungeons and dragons really turned up the skill and non-weapon proficiency system of D&D. 3.5 or the d20 system being the biggest jump. But with 4th edition DnD and 5th edition less emphasis has been placed on skills, but they are still there in the players handbook. In character creation, choosing dungeons & dragons skills will be an important decision you'll have to make for your character in the game. Skill checks in 5e D&D will affect what they can do in the campaign in non-combat encounters and using skills in dungeons & dragons may very well save your life... well your character's at least!
