Yesterday, the new Five Nights at Freddy’s game was released. It was an incredible surprise to the fandom. Many months ago, Scott Cawthon, the game’s creator, hinted that he might toy around with several ideas, including that of a pizzeria tycoon game, but he was putting the sixth game in the franchise on indefinite hold.
He then dropped some cheesy 8-bit graphic hints on his site from time to time, but no one really knew what to make of it. He put some cryptic conversations in the html source code of his sites, clear indicators that something was up.
A few days ago, he announced online that he had some big news about the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s movie but he couldn’t release it yet. As an afterthought, almost, he added that he couldn’t let a whole calendar year pass without releasing at least something for the fans and that he’d put out a little game in the coming days.
He put a couple of previews on his website and it looked to be a cute, cheesy, 8-bit, 80’s style video game, and fans were excited to play, and again pick up a few hints into the mysterious lore of the franchise.
Scott announced on his site, in a poorly-done, amateurish graphic, that he’d release the treat in two days, and then surprised everyone with an early release one day later!
The reaction videos of the gamers on Youtube are spectacular, as they humorously dismiss the game and play through, only to watch it surprisingly unfold into a well-done, pizzeria tycoon game that is definitely the sixth game in the franchise, perhaps completing the canon of the FNAF universe. The first one to make it to the web, just minutes after the game’s release, was Dawko, a YouTuber from the UK. Here’s his reaction.
This happened in December, right in the midst of all of our Christmas bustle. It disrupted lives, as gamers and fans scrambled to discover things before each other.
The parallel may have been lost on most of us.
There once was another Christmas arrival, preceded by lots of teasers from its creator. Everyone knew, to some degree, it was coming sooner or later; they just didn’t know when. And most everyone was unaware of the combined body of teasers. Each had heard a little bit, here and there, and knew what they were looking for, but went about their business. without giving it much thought.
When it arrived, it seemed innocuous. It was initially announced to only a few, seemingly unimportant folks. And at first glance, it was nothing impressive. A baby, born to poor travelers, and sleeping in a barn. And then, boom. The realization that this tiny, seemingly insignificant thing was the biggest thing in the universe, foretold for millenia, and heralded by angels.
We have a lot of teasers and hints about the next big release. I can only imagine our reaction will be like Dawko’s in this video.
Merry Christmas, everybody.
