In Final Fantasy for the NES, the LOCK and LOK2 spells are absolutely broken in a literal way, meaning they just don't work in any meaningful way. Don't bother purchasing these spells for your Black Mage, Black Wizard, Reg Mage, Red Wizard, or Ninja.

The LOCK spell is a Level 1 Black Magic Spell. It's supposed to "lock-in" an enemy in place making them easier to hit. According to the Explorer's Handbook (aka the instruction manual) this spell is supposed to increase your chance of hitting an affected enemy by ten percent. Other sources show the spell is supposed to lower an enemy's evade by twenty percent. Either way, the spell will ALWAYS miss in battle, and therefore never has any effect.

The LOK2 spell is a Level 3 Black Magic Spell. The spell has a chance to effect all enemies in battle, and it's supposed to lower the evasion of each enemy it affects by twenty percent. However, the spell does the opposite of its intended effect, and in reality, will INCREASE the enemy's evade by twenty percent, making each affected target MORE DIFFICULT to hit.
