The Bug Busting Hunt For The Forge Continues! – Abiotic Factor Demo – #03
Abiotic Factor is a very Immersive, Exploration focused SciFi RPG sort of Bioshock like set in a research facility, an underground, science and office park land where you gather, smash and bash in order to survive.
There are invading alien creatures: don’t let em stop you!
Evade em all sneaky like, if that is your way.
Smashed em down and cut em up, if you crave the combat!
Or even net em up and stomp them down, if you feel like getting all crafty!
Remember human: you are master here!✊
Sort of Bioshock like?
Sort of, especially at night
Abiotic Factor is a bit like a crafting and base building take on Bioshock, complete with the focus on immersion, but absent the linearity.
During the day, you explore your environment, gathering components, and evading or battling aliens, but at night, the not big daddies awaken.
Much like Bioshock, Abiotic Factor has these huge, hulking, yet slow security bots, with their slow, ponderous movements, and creepy, searching red light, manifesting the terror of the Big Daddies.
These bots do not stop chasing you easily; they are slow and not too bright, but super tanky and nasty, and persistent!
Also, at night, the power turns off, turning the previously mostly well lit facility into a cold, creepy, death trap, evoking more of the intensity of the Bioshock fights as the monsters seem to multiply, and can more easily creep up on you, though it’s not as flashy as Bioshock, as the bugs don’t have guns; yet!
Unlike Bioshock, in Abiotic Factor, the Sci-Fi is a bit more grounded, with fabricated nets, weapons, and tools more the focus, as opposed to the super advanced, magic like plasmids of Bioshock, giving the game a more believable and harder science feel.
The Immersion!
You visually customize your character at the start, and you pick your job after the very well done, immersive intro, choosing from 9 choices; with different skill bonuses & starting points; fun!
You gain skill point experience as you do the specific skill; like in Skyrim or Morrowind; nice!
You can even take both perks, and negative perks, which grant more points; awesome for roleplaying and repeated playthroughs!
Craft and Creep, Or Kill!
In Abiotic Factor, you can creep by or evade alien monsters if you want, if for some reason you do not crave the crash of combat, and the creepy, radioactive monster bits in your hands!
That’s right, in the underground, science-ie halls of Abiotic Factor, the alien menace will not mystically or magically seal you into a room, forbidding passage absent decisive carnal combat!
No!
Wander where you will wayward scientist!
Explore The Future!
Set Up Your Science Lair!
For Science!
Base Building and Crafting is an integral part of your hunting and gathering science adventures, and crafting those bits and bobs to forge into items worthy of a science master is part of the fun, and also, how you get better gear!
Build crafting stations, repair stations, cooking stations, storage for all your collected components, barricades to fortify your location, and even alternate bases, to position your forward operating locations closer to the fray, if that is your style.
Utilize existing storage areas in your path, and even create your own, and place in convenient locations, creating forward supply drops of healing, or spare weapons to contend with your persistent foes!
Controller support is present, and worked fine, but I found Mouse and Keyboard felt far more responsive here, so that is what I used mainly in the video above.
Also, Online Co-op is present, in case that is something that interests you.
Note: This is an early look at Abiotic Factor so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Abiotic Factor is a very Immersive, Exploration focused Sci-Fi RPG that feels very influenced by BioShock, and is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
