The Complete and Utter Downfall of Bethesda: From Cutting Edge to CREATIVELY BANKRUPT
This video essay explores the rise and fall of Bethesda Game Studios. From their breakout success with Morrowind and Oblivion, their continued golden age with Fallout 3 and Skyrim, and their gradual downfall after Fallout 4 until the present day.
We'll explore how Bethesda has become out of touch with what made their past games great - the immersion of their game worlds, the interactivity, charm and unpredictability, among others. Fallout 76 and Starfield, including the Shattered Space DLC, show just how far Bethesda has fallen.
If they want the Elder Scrolls VI to be successful, Bethesda must get back to their roots, while also finding ways to innovate and get onto the cutting edge of the single player RPG space again. Because studios like CDPR and Larian are completely outclassing Bethesda today. Can they do it? Only time will tell.
As a longtime fan of BGS games, I'm not praying on their downfall. I want to see Bethesda make great games again, but at this point I've lost about 99% confidence in their ability to do so. This video is a love letter and a warning - if you become complacent and take your fans for granted, one day you will lose them.
