The Curious Case of Carto and the Map Bigger than Its Territory
In this video essay, I discuss Carto (2020) and its relationship to longstanding discussions about maps. Particularly using Alfred Korzybski and Jorge Luis Borges's thoughts on "Maps and Territory" as they relate to the ways that video games represent and collapse maps on their territories. These authors argued that "the map is NOT the territory," but in Carto the map IS the territory, which is awesome, and insane!
