I'm now playing The Darkening, a 22 level wad (11 for single player) released in 1998, but included under the year of 1999 on Doomworld's Top Wads. I use GZDoom source port, with compatibility set to "strict", on UV difficulty. I'll be playing the levels continuously and going for all kills and secrets.

My thoughts on the level:
Easy, simple, fun. Maybe a little bit too easy and simple? I mean, with only 12 maps, I kinda expect things to escalte more quickly.
