I'm now playing The Darkening, a 22 level wad (11 for single player) released in 1998, but included under the year of 1999 on Doomworld's Top Wads. I use GZDoom source port, with compatibility set to "strict", on UV difficulty. I'll be playing the levels continuously and going for all kills and secrets.

My thoughts on the level:
It was hard to find a wad I like for 1999, but fortunately I found this one. I've been binging this wad on this weekend. This map flows really nicely, it's simple, but effective. The progression in the end is a little weird, how you have to backtrack to get the blue key for no reason. But still, good intro.
