Formed as a response to the 9/11 Attacks and the failures and blindspots that allowed it to happen, the DHS’s stated goal is to prepare for, prevent, and respond to domestic emergencies, particularly terrorism.

To this end it controls the duties of agencies including but not limited to border control, the secret service, the coast guard, disaster management and cyber security.

As of 2023 the DHS ranks as the third largest Department after Defense and Veteran Affairs
