The Evil Within 2 casts doubt on the concept of a complex stealth horror, laid down by the authors in the previous part of the dilogy. The sequel is more of a third-person action movie in spirit, where horror is a rudimentary element. The game does not catch up with suspense and horror on the user, but at the same time it forces the player to always be on the alert.
The plot is not too twisted. The game begins its story with trump cards at the very start. Literally from the beginning, it is clear who is the hero, who is the victim, who is the villain, and how to solve the problem, but as the problem is solved, difficulties arise.
So, the protagonist is a desperate detective Sebastian Castellanos, who is trying to drown his grief over the loss of his daughter, at the bottom of a bottle in a local eatery, where he is a frequent visitor. The daily drinking is interrupted by Julie Kidman, the detective's former partner. The girl informs him of the news that Lily, his daughter, is alive, but in the clutches of the Mobius Corporation. Her goal is to connect the girl to the STEM system, a virtual reality machine, and make her brain the core for the system, in the digital world of which thousands of people have found a new life for themselves, settling in the three-dimensional town of Union.
In the best traditions of the genre, the system fails, the connection with Lily is cut off, and new information appears that a real psychopath is operating in Union, who has managed to bypass the system. He kills civilians and makes sculptures of their mutilated bodies, which he then scans in 3D and displays them. He recently got to Lily. Those who die in the virtual world also die in the real.
Sebastian has no choice but to plunge into a hacked and malfunctioning STEM to find the bastard, deal with him and save his daughter. The situation is complicated by the fact that the townsfolk there have turned into bloodthirsty monsters and zombies, to cope with which are still troubles.
The gameplay of the game from the third person consists in the constant exploration of the world in search of cartridges, gunpowder, first-aid kits and other auxiliary things designed to facilitate the protagonist's journey. Resources are scarce, enemies are strong, and you have a choice - go ahead or move stealthily and wield a knife.
