The F5 Tornado That Hit An Area That Had Never Seen One Before
484May 31st 1985.
An unseasonably deep low pressure system began to form, and travel from the midwestern United States, up toward Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Warm air would surge ahead of the system, with high dew points, and wind shear present.
Huge amounts of moisture were available to aid these storm systems in becoming severe.
The ingredients were there for a destructive storm system, but it was just missing one important variable, cold air.
As fate would have it, a trailing cold front would move in behind the low pressure system, providing the spark it needed to produce something truly catastrophic.
This is the story of the Niles Wheatland tornado.
