The Final Score - QUBE Demo Walk Through (brian)
The first thing you are going to think is "Portal rip off." Settle down. Let's just give this indie game a chance...see what the developers are trying to do here.
Like Portal, Qube, is a first person room by room puzzle game that requires you to problem solve to advance past each area. In the demo there are no weapons or items to aquire. You start with a pair of gloves that allow you to manipulate colored blocks in each room. The Three colors in the demo are red, blue and yellow. Red blocks protrude from walls and floors when you left click them and recede when you right click them. Some red blocks extend further than other so you may have to click multiple times to get the boxes in position to allow for you to advance past each obstacle. The blue blocks are set with a left mouse click and then activated as you walk near them to send you flying to your destination. Finally the yellow blocks come in sets of 3's and will take on different configurations based on which block you click on. They can be reset by a right click.
When you start the game you are waking up as you travel downward on a platform. No story or instructions are given at anytime during the game. There is a pleasant bit of music playing as you traverse each puzzle and there are only minimal sound effects as you click on the screen and boxes slide back and forth. All providing for a very mute and relaxing experience. Unless you are like me and are constantly falling from platforms and missing landings...then you just want to strangle someone. Visually the game looks nice and clean and what you expect from a game built on the Unreal engine. No puzzle in the demo was too frustrating once you understand how the blocks function. The demo was a bit short for my taste but it did leave me wanting more...so maybe that will work in the developers favor.
At $12.74 on steam the game is kind of pricey for basically a Portal knockoff. But I'm sure it will have it's fans. I would like to see more before I put down money though.
