Following from the previous mission, it's now time to take the Lunar Mapping and Survey System to polar orbit around the Mun to find a suitable site for the base phase. Using TAC Life Support the CSM has been upgraded into the Extended CSM for the Extended Life Orbital Missions of Apollo Applications. It had the capability to operate with one astronaut for 30 days in lunar orbit (the length of the LMSS mission in lunar polar orbit).
