The "NES version" of The Great Gatsby began as a humorous pixelated recreation of Francis Cugat's iconic book cover, with the words "PRESS START" overlaid. Inspired by this, developer Charlie Hoey and co-creator Pete Smith turned it into a full game, released online as a Flash game in 2011. Players control Nick Carraway, navigating through settings like Gatsby's mansion and New York's sewers while battling quirky enemies. The game draws influence from classic 80s titles like Mega Man and Castlevania, offering a retro feel with attention to historical and visual details.

Hoey and Smith meticulously researched visuals, even referencing photos of Gatsby’s house and the 1974 film. They emulated NES-era gameplay, with subtle nods to iconic games like Super Mario Bros. and Ninja Gaiden II. The project was presented with fictional backstory and fake magazine ads, adding a layer of humor to its release.
