Georgia is known as the land of chess queens. You have some big names of the past like Nona Gaprindašvili, Maia Chiburdanidze, Nona Ioseliani and Nana Alexandria. This tradition has been kept up and in the recent years with more strong players coming up like Nana Dzagnidze, Bela Khotenashvili, Nino Batsiashvili, Lela Javakhishvili, Salome Melia and many others.

In the men's section they have had great players like Zura Azmaiparashvili, Zurab Sturua, Giorgi Giogardze, Elizbar Ubilava and in the current generation you have the super interesting personalities like Baadur Jobava, Mikheil Mchedishvili, Levan Pantsulaia and many others.

It is clear that Georgia is a land with a rich history of chess. But from where to get some information about its great champions? Well, there is a way! At the Batumi Olympiad 2018, there is a passage that connects the main playing hall to the second hall. On either side of this passage are walls with posters of the great players of Georgian history!

Check out this video by IM Sagar Shah that tells you about how rich the history of Georgian chess is!
