As always... 'been a long time coming, but I've managed to arrange another enthralling-yet-knee-slapping review for everyone this month! This time, it's on another Japanese-imported Famicom title (with another coming up next)!

Talk about another trip through "unfamiliar territory"...

First released as an arcade game in Japan (circa '87 - not to mention, was Bandai Namco's first-ever 16-bit arcade game on its then new System 1/System 87 board), this was ported not long after to both the PC Engine (aka TG-16) and - in this case, the Famicom - aka the NES. "Yōkai Dōchūki," otherwise referred to as Shadow Land in other territories, or transliterated as "Spirit Travel Journal" / "Phantom Travel Journal" or "Tales from the Phantom Path", revolved around the exploits of young Tarosuke as he traverses through Jigoku ('hell') wiping out various spiritual and territorial creatures alike via not only the "Ki cloud bullets" he spits out, but also summoning a ghost for easier boss confrontations - namely, "Monmotaro". Tarosuke can also participate in betting contests for extra cash, visit shops for extra items and even increase his main attributes at temples by praying VERY, VERY HARD (take note, the meter must be full - prior to which you should donate a reasonable amount in advance - or your desired attribute won't be increased).

Must I mention that you only start off with ONE LIFE (which, upon death, results in an instantaneous GAME OVER)?!
