The House of the Dead | Sega Saturn Playthrough | Real hardware
6I always remember this game being too hard so I thought I would only be able to do it with cheats for this playthrough, but I found a technique – don’t use the light gun. The problem with using the gun in HOTD and not in any other Saturn games is that the enemies require a lot of shots, rather than one shot like Virtua Cop. This makes the game way too strenuous on your trigger finger. It’s just too hard to keep it up for 30 minutes. And you really do have to shoot as fast as you can – constantly.
With a controller, you lose accuracy, but if you have a fast finger like me, you can fire off a lot more shots per second. At first, I put the cheat in for no reloads and it was like I had a constant machine gun. I realised that this game was doable without cheats and had another go. I failed on the last boss. It was still tough due to having to reload so often (like at least every second). After learning a few places where I could avoid taking damage, and figuring out how to actually hit the last boss (his right leg is his weakness), I did it quite comfortably on my third go. It was still a workout but much less strenuous than using a gun.
Now that I figured this technique out, I appreciate the game much more. I used to dislike it as it was a slog.
