I’m just going to copy and paste my Clockwork Knight 1 review here because it’s almost the same game but just mention that this has added a minecart type level and I enjoyed the game more overall.
This is a good game, but it’s not good enough to be a Saturn game, and unfortunately it is one of the best 2D platformers on the Saturn. The devs just copied from the success of Toy Story (even though Toy Story existed on previous consoles), and all they had to do was make a good platformer. They did what they intended but unfortunately for the them, the SNES and Megadrive were full of great platformers. Far better than this.
At the time, it was probably impressive for incorporating 3D, polygon graphics in a side scroller and having cut scenes, but since they aren’t impressive in the future, you have to judge it by the gameplay, which is just average.
The controls aren’t great but functional. The key attack is too short and makes bosses hard to hit. The bosses are in general quite annoying because they are a breeze at first and then they use an attack that is difficult to dodge right at the end so you have to start again.
The difficulty of the game however is super easy. I did it on Normal on my first attempt. Which is satisfying after playing so many rock-hard retro games.
There are bonus levels after each boss fight which give you a way of earning loads and loads of lives. It might be luck to some people but I could consistently win multiple lives and spend a lot of time winning lives. This became very boring and I had to cut it out of the video.
In the end I would just fail on purpose because I didn’t need the extra lives.
I sound like I don’t like the game but that’s not true. It’s charming, and is not a bad game at all, it’s just not great and doesn’t hold up to many platform games from the generation before.
