The Hunt for Red October - NES (1991)
I played this first without using the stealth drive, so I gave it another go and...it really doesn't change much. You do get ignored by enemy subs and sometimes torpedo tracking can be avoided, but it's actually quite rare, at least in the first stage, to even run into them. It's not a terrible game, but it's not great. Controls are fine, but the design of everything makes it a bit frustrating. I do like how they practically force you to look at your radar if you want to get powerups, because they can disappear before you even notice they are visually there, but there's a lot of things to balance and not in a fun or rewarding way. It does answer the question of what a political/military thriller would look like if translated into a video game: an action shooter, of course.
