Review of Starbound, an indie game in alpha being produced by the UK-based independent studio Chucklefish Ltd. Starbound takes place in a two-dimensional, procedurally generated universe with gameplay mechanics similar to that of Minecraft and Terraria. The player will explore this universe in order to obtain new weapons, armor, and miscellaneous items.

Starbound begins with the player inside a spacecraft fleeing their homeworld, each race with their own unique reasons for leaving. With nothing to guide it, the escape pod shoots into space without direction, becoming hopelessly lost in a sea of stars.

While the game is currently in Early Access, Starbound is available on Steam and the Humble Store. As an alpha release taking cues from Minecraft and Terraria, how will Starbound perform in the video game market?

UPDATE: Starbound has left Early Access and the full release was made available on July 22, 2016.

The Initiative is a review and analysis series on newly-released PC games. The series will show my first impressions of the gameplay and features at face value, and analyze its longevity in the market and community.
