The Joy of Coding: Board Game Data Science for Beginners
Got a big ol’ wall of board games? Got enough quarantine time on your hands to take up a coding hobby? Perfect! You too can characterize your collection with fun visualizations. Chart your games by player count, complexity, play time, and more. It’s… almost as much fun as actually playing games!
This talk will provider a beginner’s view on writing Python scripts, with a focus on collecting board game metadata from BoardGameGeek.com. The use of both APIs and web scraping techniques will be covered, with links to reference material and sample code provided at conclusion of the panel.
We’ll also dive into examples of some advanced projects you can take on once you’ve mastered the basics. This portion will feature a behind-the-scenes look at PAX’s open-source Tabletop Library software, and what can be accomplished by linking game library inventories to metadata sources such as BGG.
