The Karate Kid for NES: How to Win Without Cheating (No Death Run!)
MY NINE TIPS FOR GETTING THROUGH THIS CHALLENGING CLASSIC WITHOUT SAVE STATES:
1. Step back, Daniel-San, step back! Did you notice that simple kick, backtrack, kick, backtrack thing I was doing in the tournament level?
2. There is no time limit and new enemies are always respawning. This means that, since the D and C power-ups add a tiny bit to your health meter in addition to supplying you with more special attacks, and since every 20,000 points results in an extra life, you can farm to your heart’s content just as long as you position yourself comfortably first and keep the rhythm going. (You might especially want to try this before heading into the stormy waters area!)
3. Sometimes going for a power-up isn’t worth it, seeing as they disappear all too quickly and Chozen’s students like to gang up on you all at once. There are times when you might want to consider if you’re actually safer just not trying to refill your health meter.
4. Even if you don’t feel like you need any more drum punches or crane kicks, go ahead and head into the bonus stage areas whenever you get a chance to. It’ll clear all enemies from the screen and get you closer to the next 20,000 point interval for an extra life.
5. The third boss fight is skippable. You only need to reach the girl up on the pole.
6. The birds and sticks that fly at you in stage 3 don’t do any damage, no matter how many times they hit you: they only knock you backward. (I’m not sure about the rolling rocks in stage 4; I’ve never been able to focus on them long enough to monitor my health meter confidently. This stage sure keeps you preoccupied!)
7. For whatever reason (I’m sure it’s some technological one) there are never any more than two of Chozen’s students chasing you at a time. If you keep them onscreen yet at a distance then no more will spawn.
8. The spear-bearing baddies need to be disarmed with a drum punch or crane kick.
9. Even if you don’t normally use them much make sure that you’re fairly well-stocked on drum punches by the time you reach the end. That’s how you’re supposed to handle Chozen during the final boss fight. (It’s a pretty faithful-to-the-movie game.)
10. The island where you face Chozen at the end of the game must not be leapt onto rashly. Make sure the coast is clear and be prepared for a decent possibility of facing one more enemy charge even after you’ve made it.
