킹 오브 드래곤즈

1991년 캡콤에서 발매한 판타지 액션게임이다. CPS기판으로 나왔는데, 캐릭터도 작고 액션성도 간단해서 상당히 심심한 화면을 연출한다.

전체적으로는 평작이었지만, 보스를 물리치면 나오는 무기와 방어구가 파워업하면 이에 따른 그래픽 변화가 생기는 점과 스코어에 따른 레벨업 등의 요소는 이후 나온 나이츠 오브 더 라운드, 던전 앤 드래곤 시리즈의 기반을 다졌다고 할 수 있다.

원래 캡콤은 던전 앤 드래곤 횡스크롤 액션 게임을 제작하고 싶었고, 어느 정도 제작한 뒤에 당시 지적재산권을 보유하고 있던 TSR에게 보여주었으나 이게 무슨 D&D야!라는 소리와 함께 허가가 나지 않아, 설정 및 타이틀을 바꾸어 완성시켰다. 그리고 몇 년 후 TSR에 허가를 받아 던전 앤 드래곤 타워 오브 둠을 만들면서 그 한을 풀게 되었다. 그것 역시 명작으로 손꼽히는 작품들이지만, 지적재산권 사용권이 만료되어 2까지만 출시되었다.


플레이어 캐릭터


파이터(데렉)
근접 전투형 캐릭터다. 방패로 가드가 가능하며 높은 HP가 안정적이다. 레버를 앞으로 하며 공격 버튼 연타 시 빠른 속도로 공격한다. 안정적인 성능으로 3인 플레이시 거의 3순위로 꼽히는 캐릭터다.


•클레릭(알도)
근접 전투형 캐릭터다. 방패로 가드가 가능하며 HP는 파이터보다 적지만 방어력이 더 높다. 레버를 앞으로 하며 공격 버튼 연타 시 빠른 속도로 공격한다. 특수능력으로 자신의 HP가 꽉 차있는 상태에서 회복 아이템 습득 시, 다른 플레이어들의 HP를 함께 회복시킨다. 당연히 1인 플레이 땐 하등 쓸모없는 기능이다. 파이터의 하위호환격 성능이지만 특수능력이 성직자 다운 힐이라 가끔 파이터 대신 선택되기도 한다. 3인 플레이시 4순위로 꼽히는 캐릭터다.


•위저드(레제)
원거리 전투형 캐릭터다. 이 게임 플레이어블 캐릭터 중 최강은 위저드라는게 거의 정석인데, 그 중 가장 큰 이유가 5~7레벨 무기 때문이다. 위저드의 8레벨 무기가 생각보다 약해서 버그가 아닌가 착각이 들기도 하는데 그 이유는 5~7레벨 무기가 너무나 강력해서이다. 넉백되지 않는 보스를 포함한 거의 대부분의 몬스터들한테 5~7레벨 무기의 다단히트 대미지가 실로 막강했고, 8레벨 무기에서 이 다단히트 특성이 사라지고 단타로 바뀌자 1히트 단타 대미지는 8레벨이 더 좋음에도 7레벨 무기의 공격 1회 다단히트 대미지가 훨씬 강한 상황이 생긴것이다. 이 영향으로 경험치 상승이나 레벨업에도 유리하고 타격감도 좋다. 다만 단타 대미지 자체는 7레벨 무기도 그렇게 강하진 않은데 어떤 공격이든 1방에 넉백되는 스켈레톤을 공격해보면 알 수 있다. 초기의 낮은 체력은 어느정도 익숙해진 중반 이후엔 문제가 되지 않는다. 압도적인 대미지의 편의성 때문에 초보 고수 할 것 없이 3인 플레이시 당연히 1순위로 꼽히는 캐릭터이다. 단 스코어링에서는 엘프에 밀려서 2위다.


•엘프(라벨)
원거리 전투형 캐릭터다. 다른 판타지 소재 게임에서 엘프가 여성, 금발, 긴머리 속성으로 주로 나오는 것과는 달리 이쪽은 정말로 대부분의 액션 게임에서 찾아보기 힘든 남자 엘프다. 그래서 당시 국딩들은 이 게임의 엘프를 일명 로빈훗이라고 부르곤 했다. 화살을 최대 2발까지 발사 가능하나, 몬스터와 전투 중 중거리에서 레버를 앞으로 하며 공격 버튼 연타 시 화살 속사가 가능해 위저드 못지않은 위력을 낸다. 다만 HP나 방어력이 높지 않기 때문에 맞을것 같다 싶으면 Y축으로 재빨리 피하는 요령이 필요하다. 화살 속사가 상당히 강력해 3인 플레이시 2순위로 꼽히는 캐릭터이다.


•드워프(발가스)
근접 전투형 캐릭터다. 방패로 가드가 가능하지만 HP가 거의 원거리 전투형인 위저드나 엘프급으로 낮은데, 레버를 앞으로 하며 공격 버튼을 연타해도 체감이 거의 안될 정도로 공격속도가 느린 약캐릭터. 특수능력으로 웨어울프 석궁병의 화살이나 스켈레톤의 투창같은 투사체 공격은 맞지 않고, 튀어오르지 않고 땅바닥에 있는 슬라임도 바로 공격 가능하다. 다만 이 특수능력도 클레릭처럼 다른 플레이어에게 직접 효과를 주거나 하는것도 아닌 드워프 본인 생존용 특수능력


The King of Dragons

The King of Dragons (Japanese: ザ・キングオブドラゴンズ, Hepburn: Za Kingu obu Doragonzu) is a 1991 side-scrolling beat-'em-up video game by Capcom that allows players to choose from five characters in order to travel through the kingdom of Malus and defeat the monsters that have taken over, as well as their leader, the red dragon Gildiss. It features a level advancement system, allowing character attributes to be upgraded as players progress through the game. The setting is very similar to that of Dungeons & Dragons and other medieval fantasy worlds, with familiar monsters such as Orcs, Gnolls, Harpies, Wyverns, Cyclopes, and Minotaurs. The music in this game was composed by Yoko Shimomura.

The game was ported to the Super NES and released in 1994. An emulated version of the game was released as part of Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 and Capcom Classics Collection: Reloaded. In September 13, 2018, Capcom announced a new compilation called Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle with The King of Dragons being one of the seven titles included and released digitally for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows on September 18, 2018.


Gameplay​

The game has 16 levels, though many are quite short. King of Dragons features a role-playing video game-like level advancement system. Points scored for killing monsters and picking up gold count towards experience, and the character gains levels at regular intervals. With each level, the character's health bar increases, other attributes such as range improve, and the character also becomes invulnerable for a few seconds. Along the way, different weapon and armor upgrades for each character may also be picked up.

King of Dragons features a simple control system that consists of a single attack button, and a jump button. By pressing both buttons, the character unleashes a magical attack that strikes all enemies in screen (its strength varies according to the character used) at the expense of losing energy. The fighter, cleric and dwarf can also use their shield to block certain attacks by tilting the joystick back right before the impact.

This is one of the many Capcom games to feature the yashichi power-up item. There are three such power-ups hidden throughout the game, each giving the player an extra continue.

The five playable heroes each have their own traits and fighting skills in the game. The Fighter is very good with melee attacks and defense but lacks magical ability. The Dwarf is able to dodge and block attacks, is the most agile character that has decent melee attacks albeit the shortest range and little magic ability. The Elf has good agility and great range with archery but is not physically strong. The Cleric has great defense, decent magic (with the ability to heal his comrades) and melee attacks but bad agility. The Wizard has poor defense but very good magical attacks and quick melee attacks.
