철근과 콘크리트로 만들어진 정글인 뉴욕. 모두를 무자비하게 먹이로 삼는 모든 종류의 약탈자들이 모여 있는 곳. 언제건, 어디서건.
회색지대로부터 휴식을 제공하는 녹색의 오아시스인 센트럴 파크. 여기 가족과 함께 소풍을 즐기는 미 해병대 소속의 프랭크 캐슬 대위가 있다.
그 날, 캐슬 가족은 우연히 마피아들의 잔인한 살해현장을 발견했다. 목격자들을 두려워한 살인자들은 곧바로 비참한 가족들을 쏴죽였다.

데모화면에서 나오는 스토리(세계판 기준)
캡콤에서 만화 퍼니셔를 기반으로 만든 벨트스크롤 액션게임. 스토리 상으로는 퍼니셔의 탄생 부분을 베이스로 삼고 있다. 원작과 마찬가지로 브루노 패밀리에게 일가족이 살해당하고 복수를 위해 자신의 가족을 살해한 브루노를 찾아가며, 그 조직의 배후에 킹핀이 있다는 사실을 알고 킹핀을 조지러 가는 내용.
아케이드 명가인 캡콤에서 만든 게임이니 만큼 완성도도 높고 원작의 재현도 뛰어난 편. 타격감도 호쾌하여 정말로 때리는 맛이 팍팍난다. 거기다가 총을 가진 적이 등장할 경우 격투전에서 총기류를 쓰는 총격전으로 빠르게 전환되는 등의 새로운 시도까지 있다. 적을 타격할 때 "BLOW!", "KA-BLAM!!"등 미국 코믹스식 효과음이 표시되는 것도 볼만하다.
참신하게도 수류탄을 소지하고 다닌다. 점프중 AB를 눌러서 수류탄을 바닥으로 투척하며 메가크래시 판정에 데미지도 상당한 편. 각 스테이지를 클리어하거나 캐릭터가 부활할 때마다 수류탄이 일정량 새로 지급된다. 수류탄은 기본적으로는 공중에서만 사용할 수 있으나, 메가크래시를 발동하는 데에 필요한 체력이 모자랄 경우, 메가크래시 대신에 '지상'에서 수류탄을 사용할 수 있게 된다. 뉴트럴이나 걷는 중에는 전방에 수류탄을 던지면서 뒷쪽으로 전신 포복을, 구르기중에는 구르다가 수류탄을 슬쩍 까고 전신 포복 자세를 취하며 어느 쪽을 사용해도 발동 중에는 무적시간이 부여된다. 이 동작이 꽤 멋있기도 하고 표면상 체력이 0인 상태에서 적들을 상대하니 갤러리들이 보기에는 일반 플레이보다 더욱 있어 보인다.
타 게임에서는 보통 적을 잡고 방향키+A를 하면 던지는 것이 전부이지만, 퍼니셔는 적을 잡은 상태에서 다채로운 공격이 가능하다. 기본적인 던지기 외에도 점프+A로 공중에서 던지거나 점프 후 ↓+A로 바닥에 내리찍을 수도 있고[4] 잡은 상태에서 메가크래시도 가능하다. 그리고 바닥에 쓰러져서 누워 있는 적들을 집어들고 던지는 것도 가능. 이 방법을 이용하여 2명이서 적들을 바닥에 떡치듯 내던지는 플레이도 가능하다. 같은 방법으로 무기도 점프하면서 던질 수 있는데, 이를 이용하여 대시 점프 + 뒤로 적&무기 던지기라는 기술로 활용할 수 있다.
2P 캐릭터가 닉 퓨리인데, 원작 만화에서 퍼니셔의 동료 비슷하게 활동한 적도 있고, 퍼니셔와 마찬가지로 초인이 아니면서 다소 과격한(물론 퍼니셔보다는 부드럽게) 방식으로 악에 맞서 싸운다는 점에서 선택된 것으로 보인다. 닉 퓨리는 시종일관 담배를 피우고 있다.
필살기 (↓↑A)는 킥을 구사하며 반달모양 장풍을 앞으로 발사한다. 1P 캐릭터(퍼니셔)는 뒤돌려차기 모션을 취하며 사정거리가 짧은 대신 후딜레이가 짧다. 닉 퓨리는 서머솔트 킥 모션으로 사정거리가 조금 더 긴 대신 후딜레이가 조금 더 길다. 메가크래시 작렬 시 닉 퓨리는 우량~아~!(혹은 지역에 따라 울엄~마~!)라는 기합을 외친다. 물론, 이 기합은 소라미미다.
최종보스는 킹핀. 잡혀서 던지기를 당하기 직전 레버흔들기와 버튼을 연타하면 위기를 모면할 수 있으나 실수로라도 낙법을 실패하면 데미지가 실로 곤란하다.
The Punisher
The Punisher (Japanese: パニッシャー, Hepburn: Panisshā) is a 1993 beat 'em up arcade game developed and released by Capcom. It stars the Marvel Comics' antihero the Punisher (Frank Castle) and co-stars S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury as the second player's character as they embark on a mission to kill the crime lord the Kingpin and bring down his organization. While following the same general formula as Capcom's previous beat 'em ups, the game has a range of usable weapons and a comics-style presentation.
The Punisher gained significant popularity in arcades and is widely regarded as one of the best titles in the beat 'em up genre as well as one of the best video game adaptations of comic books. A Mega Drive/Genesis port was developed by Sculptured Software and published by Capcom to mixed reviews and commercial failure.
Gameplay
The Punisher follows the same side-scrolling beat'em up formula Capcom established in Final Fight and Captain Commando as the protagonists engage ordinary foes and stage bosses. As in most beat'em up games of this kind, progression through the game is achieved by systematically dispatching all common enemies and proceeding to the right (or left), and defeating the bosses met at the end of each stage. Unlike in Final Fight, the size, abilities and tactics of both player characters (the Punisher and Nick Fury) are essentially interchangeable; they both use the same basic moves, such as punches, kicks and throws, which can be chained into combos, as well as similar special attacks. Basic attacks can be combined to cause extra damage to enemies. The game is presented in a comic book-like style, including featuring on-screen onomatopoeias such as "BLAM!" for gunshots.
Plot
In the game's intro, U.S. Marine Captain Frank Castle enjoys a picnic with his family in Central Park. The Castle family accidentally discovered a mob killing. Fearing any witnesses, the killers gunned down the family. To avenge them and all others like them Frank becomes The Punisher. The game begins in an illegal casino and the streets of the New York City, with the merciless vigilante Frank "the Punisher" Castle (optionally partnered with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury) in pursuit of the Mafia enforcer Bruno Costa who ordered the killing of Castle's family; the chase ends with a fight against Chester Scully (a minor villain from the comics). Frank "interrogates" Scully, gets the information he needs, and then promptly shoots him. Still on track of Bruno, the Punisher infiltrates the mob's Pantaberde resort in Florida via a water duct. He breaks into a hotel and corners Bruno, who is suddenly killed by a robot called Guardroid, who tells Frank the Kingpin has programmed him to terminate him, which the Punisher must then take on.
The Punisher then raids a major drug-smuggling ring at the local harbor, which ends with him confronting Bonebreaker in a waterfront warehouse. After that, the Punisher attacks the Kingpin's poppy field at a cave in Arizona. The Punisher boards and destroys a freight train which is commanded by Bushwhacker.
