The Lab VR Longbow on Steam Deck
Got VR working on my Steam Deck via Quest 2 and Virtual Desktop, on a Windows 10 To Go SD card (created with Rufus). The Steam Deck is directly connected to my main router by a USB-C hub with an ethernet cable port.
I set VD to 72Hz with Spacewarp and CAS enabled, and Steam VR game resolution about 70%. Even at the lower fidelity, I had a lot of fun and it was not really an issue once I got into the game.
It did get choppier as I went on, perhaps due to heat throttling and some other programs I had started up while messing around. I'm still tweaking settings and looking into adding FSR to get it to run a bit smoother. I should probably run an overlay but I just wanted to see what the subjective experience was like first.
I also did a few complete runs of COMPOUND and had a blast! Perhaps it's my bias growing up with NES/SNES/Genesis games, but the low res/interpolated fuzziness combined with the simple retro graphics kind of added to the charm, like I somehow got sucked into an old VHS tape. I'll be posting a video for that along with any other games I find playable.
Keep in mind I've built up my VR legs and am likely an outlier when it comes to my experience. Do NOT go out and order the Deck thinking you can play Alyx or other photorealistic games on it. I just happened to have both the Quest 2 and Steam Deck and wanted to push this little workhorse to its limits.
I also tried Oculus Link with a cable, but the official Oculus software will straight up say the hardware is unsupported and not allow you to play at all. Additionally, I tried my Odyssey+: the Windows Mixed Reality Portal loaded perfectly fine, but starting SteamVR caused a 301 "key component failed" error, and none of the solutions I found online worked for me. Maybe I'll try again another day.
