The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a 2.5d metroidvania that I thought looked right up my street when I saw its reveal trailer last year. Noir detective fiction with an eldritch horror bent = yes please.

Imagine my excitement when, ahead of the game's April 2023 launch, a demo was announced for the February Steam NextFest.

How was the game? Well, here's an hour of my impressions: positive AND negative.

NOTES:

What I value in a metroidvania is not always the same as what others value in a metroidvania. As a reminder, I'm interested in three things usually: combat, exploration, and abilities that add to combat and exploration.
►Combat: Not the game's strength. It isn't awful, but it is a little clunky this early on.
►Exploration: excellent. The world is facinating, the map is gorgeous, and I forsee interesting ways of getting around.
►Abilities: a little lackluster in the demo. The double jump works, but it is kinda odd in terms of it only works in specific places. Dodge also works, but I'm not a fan of it being on the right stick. Again, there will almost certainly be more fun things to unlock.
