DESCRIPTION:

This animation was a real pain to do. It had SO many gimbal lock problems, that it's not even funny. So I had to force myself to go and finish it, knowing that it would be difficult and frustrating...

In general I often find myself fighting the animation program, and things like gimbal locks. But remember, one of the reasons I'm doing this project is to improve the way I work, and the way I animate. I need to learn how to fix problems like gimbal lock, and best case, how to avoid it.. In this animation, I failed to do both.

I also learned some things from this animation though..

1. I learned how to animate using the pose to pose method
2. I learned about the unforgiving it is, when you smooth out all the keys.
3. I learned how to spell the word Gimbal Lock.
4. I learned that animating in local space in 3ds max is like dancing with the devil. It feels good, but at the end of the day, he will rip your heart out.
5. I learned that animating in Gimbal space is the right way to do it, but also, it's like working in the twilight zone.
6. I learned about the Euler Filter, which is "Suppose" to fix gimbal lock problems... "Supposed to".
7. I learned how TCB rotation can be a viable solution to gimbal lock problems.
8. I learned about why you shouldn't use TCB rotations.

I learned a lot of things during this animation, so all the trouble haven't been for nothing :-)

Oh, in case you are wondering. The hair and hat is also animated by hand

Now I need to go and revisit the rig, make some changes, and prepare for the next animation in this series.

Thanks for watching :-)
