The Lost Vikings is a multi-character platform game released in 1992 by Interplay and Silicone&Synapse for the DOS and other consoles of that era. The story involves three vikings who are captured by an alien named Tomator, so now the vikings have to find a way to get back home. What makes this game unique is that you take control of 3 individual characters, each with their own special abilities: Eric the Swift, Baleog the Fierce and Olaf the Stout. You travel through 5 different "ages", each with a distinctive theme: Tomator's spaceship, the prehistoric, Egypt, the factory, Candy Land and finally back onto the spaceship where you fight Tomator himself. The goal is to get all 3 vikings to the exit point, indicated by the green "EXIT" sign. You can't complete a level without all 3 vikings - if one of them dies or gets stuck somewhere, you have to restart the level from the beginning. Each viking starts off with 3 hitpoints represented by the red dots underneath their picture at the bottom of the screen. You can add an extra blue hitpoint if you grab a medal, though you can never have more than 4 hitpoints. The various hazards you face along the way take away more or less hitpoints depending on their nature: getting shot by enemies, making contact with them and falling from too great a height take away one point, while getting hit by a fireball takes away 2. You die instantly if you touch an electric fence, get crushed by a heavy object or fall in water, lava or spikes. A hitpoint can be restored by various food items such as tomatoes, radishes, ham, etc. but these can't add any more than 3 hitpoints at a time. Other items you come across a lot and are crucial to beating a level are the red, yellow and blue keys. These are used to activate locks of the same color, which in turn unlock or turn off certain barriers such as electric fences, doors, walls and fans, as well as lower bridges, move platforms or unlock elevators. You also use bombs to blow up certain walls and floors and also kill most enemies if they're within range when the bomb goes off. The bombs can also kill the vikings if they stand too close, so be careful where you drop it and back up in time ! Another very useful item is the orange "X" which kills every enemy on the screen when used. The items can be transferred from one viking to another if they're close enough to each other. Any viking can use any item, with the exception of the flaming arrows which only Baleog the Fierce can equip. Each viking has different abilities: Eric the Swift is the only one who can jump, so you often use him to grab items which are too high or pass over certain obstacles. If you get enough speed and press "D" while running, he can head-butt certain walls to knock them down and also kill some enemies or at least take away some of their energy. After bashing something, Eric gets dizzy for a few seconds, leaving him vulnerable to attacks, so be careful where you perform this move ! Baleog the Fierce can swing his sword with the space bar and shoot an infinite number of arrows by pressing "D". The arrows have a longer range, so you'll tend to use them the most, though there are certain enemies that can only be killed with the sword, such as the mummies in Egypt. You can upgrade to flaming arrows which kill all enemies in a single shot, but not all levels have them and you don't carry them from one level to another. Baleog's arrows can also press buttons and flip switches if they're in the arrow's flying path - you'll do this a lot throughout the game. Finally there's Olaf the Stout, the shield bearer. He's the only one who can't attack, unless you count dropping bombs and using the orange "X". His shield can block most projectiles and enemies, either straight ahead or above his head by pressing the space bar. When he holds the shield over his head, it acts as a platform, allowing the other vikings to stand on it or hide under it to protect them from falling objects and projectiles. Olaf can also use the shield as a glider by holding it above his head and leaping off a ledge. It slows down his fall, preventing him from taking fall damage and also allows him to maneuver around spikes or electric wires. The game has 37 different levels, each with a 4 letter password which allows you to continue if you quit the game. Some levels are like puzzles and require a bit of problem solving, often with no instructions, which sounds like a chore, but this is actually what keeps the game from getting boring. The music is very good for the time and the controls fell tight and responsive, although sadly you can't remap the keys in any way. The triple character format makes the game a very addicting experience and will make you wish there were more levels after you finish it. I beat the game about 10 times now and I still find it a great experience, no matter how many times I play. Try it out ! I guarantee you'll be hooked !
