As some of you may know, I am working on some hard science fiction. Hard science fiction is science fiction in which all of the technology is scientifically feasible and based on realistic physical properties. No warp drive, no light sabers, no flying spacecraft as if they were airplanes unless they are in an atmosphere.

It is the early 22nd Century. The main character in the story, Jake Barnes, flees to the Moon to escape his criminal past and buys a light freighter spacecraft: an Anopheles LX-25 which he christens the "Flotsam". Now I need, for my own personal satisfaction and for future cover art for the book, to know exactly what the Flotsam looks like and how it works. I have to "build" it in a manner of speaking.

So I take you through my process of building the 3D model of the Flotsam, and along the way talk about such things as resources on the Moon and 3D modeling and graphics software.

The names of some of the entities and persons in the book come from my previous aborted attempts at science fiction. Corporate names such as Anopheles and Aga come from my Old Space Dog's Guide:

The character Austin Bonner is a character that I have been trying to do something with since forever. Austin Bonner is one part cowboy, one part bona fide space hero, one part gun toting anarchist nutcase (only living human known to carry personal nuclear weapons), and one part gene-jacking post-human who genuinely is at home in space in ways that probably no other living person is.

My most recent abortive attempt to put Austin to work was in my overly ambitious novel attempt called The Abandoned.
