Games and Movies in SDR are mastered with 16-235 range in-mind (this then effectively becomes its ”Full Range” of Contrast)

Then the industry limits white peak and raise the black levels and midtones to a more washed out look to help the majority of folks out there with less impressive panels/monitors that have crushed blacks normally and clipping whitepoints.

then HDR is then mastered on-top instead of being worked from the ground up. Some games and fan made short movies are mastered in FULL/FULL like Halo Infinite for example that has full/full support and is made for Dolby Vision, but still looks better in HDR10. When the HDR is worked on-top of the SDR resolve they boost the already washed out image, HDTVTEST and everyone else tell everyone to use FULL/FULL or AUTO/AUTO or LIMITED/LIMITED on video range.

But this isn’t how video range and rgb range works.

RGB Range is how much of the HDMI signal do you want to be its full uncompressed signal, and Video Range on the TV end is on LG OLED and Samsung related to how you compress the signal to get it back to its default standardised plain.

Limited on TV ensures that the original content source is displayed correctly, industry standard for mastering is 16-235 (Limited) and PS5 RGB Range on Auto or FULL ensures that PS5 is sending out all of its correct signal 100% fully loaded without compression.

Full Range and Full Range creates a miss match in the image were your now stretching out the bands of contrast and your creating washed out midtones and highlights and a black level raised “black floor”

16-235 is the source signal origin, then forcing it onto an image resolve of 0-255 is why its getting black level raise to this extent that you always mention and its why you always say in certain games that HDR is broken.

It’s there methodology that is broken.

Content Creators are ruining 50 000+ people’s TVs monthly by misinforming them with this information. Its resulting in less brightness on highlights and a washed out desaturated image with raised black on an OLED. Limited/Limited is also extremely dumb, because then your mismatching the other direction, the source material signal is now limiting its signal resolve maning it even worse then FULL/FULL.

To then align the picture back together you need to do Limited on TV and Full on your shiny PC or console or whatever source you have. To ensure that full range information is being sent uncompressed so that you can then start to fix the washout caused by correctional artists that want to help the consumers and for black level to get more deep and black like they were originally assigned to be.

Most of my older videos are inaccurate and outdated, so I you don’t see me outright recommending a certain video, then take that video info with a grain of salt. We learn new things as humans everyday and sadly that makes me go through this aswell. Older videos on my channel might be fun ans entertaining but I do not recommend those settings anymore.
