The Most Beautiful Fighting Game in 2005
Dead or Alive 4, the first fighting game to be released on the 7th generation. Highly praised for its high polygon character models and detailed backgrounds but not so much on the game play. It was supposed to be a launch title for the Xbox 360, but it was delayed for over a month because of change with the design decisions. This was the game Itagaki worked his hardest on. He only slept once in a few days when he was working on this game. It shows a lot of his commitment when it comes to the technical design, but unfortunately, I cannot say the same when it comes to the game play balancing.
Tracking with most strings are extremely strong, which renders the free step movement to be almost useless. Hitting somebody to the wall doesn't reward a lot because the opponent can still fight back with a defensive hold rather than giving a guaranteed follow-up. Before Dead or Alive 4 came out, there was a preview of the game that showcased new moves, but they were removed for several reasons, which was also one of the causes of the game's delay for its release. And there was an update patch that took out what they left behind. The A.I. is atrociously difficult. Even on normal difficulty, it can be very aggressive as well as be able to react to your inputs. Alpha-152 is a pain to deal with.
The improvements with Dead or Alive 4's game play from DOA3 were the knockdowns as well as the ground game. It's the Dead or Alive game to introduce the bounce launcher, which can give a short combo, like Leifang's turning axe kick (H+K or K,2K) on counter hit. Dead or Alive 4 is also the first game to have uniformed grounded hits. In the older games, you can only hit an opponent lying down on the ground with 2P or 8P+K, anything else will make the opponent invincible. In DOA4, you can use any move that has a hitbox that can make contact on a lying down opponent.
