In the older Soul Calibur games, Raphael's back (or retreat) Catarella Needle was a back turned move. In Soulcalibur VI, they put it as one of his Preparation stance moves. Because of that, the move doesn't have much purpose. It could probably be useful against teleporting characters who just suddenly appear from behind, but it doesn't really do much in most situations.
