The New Snake Eyes Movie Sucks & Storm Shadow Cobra Origins Would Be A Better Film
First, Snake Eyes was presented as an irredeemable character throughout the whole movie, making him a villain of the film in his own film! So much so, I actually sympathized more with Storm Shadow. Let me explain: Snake Eyes initially infiltrates the clan that Storm Shadow welcomes him to, and trains him in with the intention to help teach Snake Eyes to become a better warrior, and hero. Great intentions. But, Snake Eyes still stole the jewel, and betrayed not only his trust, but the entire trust of the entire clan. As a result, most of the clan is then demolished and pummeled by Cobra and the forces of the film’s main villain; Snake Eyes did that, but isn’t the one who is punished. No. It’s Storm Shadow who is punished even when it was Storm Shadow who wanted nothing but to help Snake Eyes. What makes it even worse is that before all of this, during Snake Eyes’ time in the clan, Snake Eyes tells Keiko that he would really like to put in the work to become part of the family and part of the clan, but nope. He’s still driven throughout the whole film out of revenge for the death of his father. Not once did Snake Eyes do the right thing in this film. Even when Storm Shadow is kicked out of the clan, Snake Eyes doesn’t even accept responsibility for everything, he doesn’t even try to get Storm Shadow to stay even though, in the second act of the film, he calls Storm Shadow a brother, or maybe that was just another lie; which still proves my point that Snake Eyes was always an irredeemable character throughout the whole film, making him more antagonistic than all the rest. Since they took this direction with Snake Eyes, it actually made the audience sympathize more with Storm Shadow, making storm shadow the collateral damage, the hero caught in the crossfire, the bad end of the stick of Snake Eye’s betrayal making this a storm shadow cobra origins movie instead.
Speaking of antagonists, take Baroness out of the film and nothing changes. The order of events all happen the same way. The film proved her whole role in the film was to acquire the jewel for Cobra after the bad guy takes out the clan and gets his revenge. Otherwise, she literally makes no effect on the order of events of the film. The jewel still falls into the hands of the bad guy, Storm Shadow still becomes a villain, the clan is destroyed, she has no effect. The only way she finds her way into the story is to set up a sequel by equipping Storm Shadow with a Cobra army, and that wasn’t even part of the main story; that was a mid credits scene isolated from the main story! That late in the movie she found her purpose. Let’s be honest, she was never getting that jewel.
They should’ve explained that Snake Eyes was really there to steal the jewel, not just infiltrate. Because we only learn of the jewel being in the film later on, going into our third act of the movie. We don’t even understand the jewel’s importance to the 600 year history of the clan it belongs to. There is no origin for itself. No explanation.
Speaking of main characters, Snake Eyes as a character really wasn’t adapted well at all. Snake Eyes has always been a mute, but in this movie, he never shuts up. He was a quick witted charismatic and I don’t get it. He didn’t even get his throat slashed to set him up to be a mute like he’s always been. Not only that, but c’mon, the fact that he wears his accurate and iconic ninja costume only at the end of the movie sucks a lot. We don’t even get to see him fight in the suit, I mean, through all the posters of the film and marketing, he is wearing his iconic suit, but he doesn’t wear it all until the final ten seconds of the film. It was the biggest disappointment of the film that I went to see a snake eyes film, and barely got to see him don the snake eyes outfit at all.
While we’re talking about Snake Eyes, let’s talk about a big plothole. One of my brothers who went to see the movie with me brought up this good point. Storm Shadow was convinced that snake eyes would pass the pure of heart test with the Snakes, even though Storm Shadow literally found Snake eyes working for the yakuza, smuggling guns in fish; which is the most unethical, and dishonest line of work to be in. So, knowing that, Storm Shadow STILL thought Snake Eyes would pass the pure of heart test.
DO you agree with me? What are your thoughts on the film?
