The Ode of Resurrections | Genshin Impact - Part 1533
You know, the idea of little Kachina dying in the fight, then suddenly the resurrections failing, sounds like a shocking plot point.
Well, problem...
We know Kachina isn't going to stay dead, and will be brought back despite the Ode's fail. Know why?
SHE'S PLAYABLE! Hell, the story GIVES you her. This isn't HSR, where dead character are playable regardless. As evident by Signora and the original Balladeer, dead characters in Genshin are not going to be playable. So we know we'll get the resurrections Ode to work again. They cannot pull any twist about what's going with her when we do find her. Because, by the rule of playability, they CAN'T do anything.
Unless, an abyss monster pulls an Enjou and shapeshifts into her appearance and that clone dies or something...
It's like a prequel where your main character appears to sacrifice. It's a PREQUEL, not a sequel, so there's no tension there.
Is this a negative? Normally in story writing, yes, where writers try to trick you into thinking someone who won't die, will die...
HOWEVER, I personally don't see it as such. And in fact, this isn't what the writers in this scenario are going for, as evident by how they talked about the OOR before Kachina's team went out. So tricking you thinking Kachina is lost for good, is not their goal here.
And so, I see it not a negative plot point, because there is something I value in this that other people never mention when they talk about these "disney death fakeouts", as they say,
How the characters react to the situation!
We know character X won't be a lost cause or have some twist on them or whatever (In this case, Kachina). But you have to remember, these stories and situations take place in the game world, through the characters perspectives. We're just the "audience" playing through their life story. Dynamics and interpersonal conflicts and behaviors helps give the characters real emotion, sense of logic, friendships, etc, which is how we connect and feel things when we play. Good stories, good characterization, helps us feel a human connection. We're the invisible friend in their friend circle.
Just like bonds with dogs and cats even though they don't have human logic or sentience. This is thus also why we all sobbed during "Masquarade of the Guilty".
However, Natlan is not Fontaine. So they cannot pull a big twist like they did there with Kachina in this situation, by established protocols like "perma-dead characters are not playable". So we, the backseat riding audience, know she's going to be saved, no ultimate issue for her. But, in this world where the characters are not aware of the established rules of playability; thus in THEIR perspective, Kachina very well could be gone for good. They think since the Ode failed, this poor lil gal could be gone.
In other words, the dynamics of their resolves. How much do they truly care for her? Were they just acquaintances and they are good-heartedly worried? Were they intensely close and would give their life for her? Would their sense of team honor push them into swallowing their fears? Would they see this as futile and not try to undergo the rescue?
So rather than have us, the ghost friend, be churning our stomachs for her, like we did in Fontaine, instead we see how the Natlan friend circle and others think of Kachina, how much they value her, and see how far they're willing to go or do to get her back. Possibly if they'll even deny the in-universe idea she's lost for good. How much it may (or may not) affect them.
So while in general, trying to death out a character who, by basis of protocol, is not going to be forever gone, seems like a cheap move, I think it has great potential and benefit, since it can flesh out the other characters, in their perspectives, on how they feel and act in these situations.
Like if a IRL friend had their grandfather shipped out to the middle east to fight. Tough guy, high rank, very likely he'll return. Everyone is confident in that. Yet, just because you believe so, doesn't mean you shouldn't comfort that friend. In their point of view, someone close in THEIR life went off to a death zone. You can see how it affects them, or not. How they feel or think of it, or not. etc.
If you ask me, the only way they could really screw this up, is if Kachina truly does die off, or they try to pull a HSR and have Capitano revealed to be her. Because it would break all previously established rules and consistencies. Or in the second case, because this is Genshin, not HSR.
