In Dragon Warrior III for the NES (also known as Dragon Quest III for the Famicom) there's a super easy bug you can exploit which will allow your characters to defend and attack (or do other stuff) in the same round of combat. This, obviously, is normally not possible.

All you need to do is select the PARRY command with your character, then cancel that action using the B button. Then, choose another action with the character such as FIGHT. When the combat turn begins, your character will attack AND that character's incoming damage will be reduced by approximately fifty percent.

It also works if you PARRY, cancel, then have that character use a SPELL or an ITEM. That character will act accordingly while reducing incoming damage by about half.

Obviously this trick cannot be used with the last character in your formation, since once you choose an action with that character, the combat round begins and you cannot cancel to choose another action.

But this easy glitch makes crawling through dungeons a whole lot easier, and provides a ton of safety especially for low-level runs!
